This session will focus on the land-intensive nature of the green energy transition, driven by increased resource extraction and infrastructure development. The session will highlight the significant costs of this transition on both land and people, with a particular emphasis on the disproportionate impacts on Indigenous Peoples, pastoralist communities, and smallholder farmers. Contributions will include firsthand accounts from affected communities, as well as strategic responses to address the new land pressures arising from the energy transition. Looking ahead, the session will explore actionable pathways to secure land rights and foster more equitable, sustainable solutions as we navigate the decarbonization of the global energy system.

eaturing a dynamic mix of government representatives, community leaders, and key actors, the discussion will explore various strategies to increase tenure commitments as a critical pathway to combat climate change and enhance climate resilience. Following a brief review of the Forest Tenure Pledge from Glasgow 2021 and its outcomes, we will delve into the compelling case for a second, expanded pledge that funds Indigenous Peoples (IPs), Afrodescendent Peoples (ADPs), and other local communities (LCs) as a prerequisite for achieving climate goals. Different perspectives and approaches will be examined, offering a comprehensive view of the issue. By the end of the panel, participants will gain clarity on the key commitments needed at COP30 and the necessary actions to advance the land tenure agenda. The session will conclude with a call to action to rally for a second pledge, urging stronger commitments to support IP, LC, and ADP land rights, and equipping participants to push for COP30 to serve as a pivotal moment for bold, transformative action on land rights as a foundational element in the fight against climate change.

As violence, displacement, and authoritarianism escalate globally, access to food and land is increasingly under threat — especially for the most vulnerable. In this powerful keynote, Michel Fakhri, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, will examine how these intersecting crises are reshaping the fight for food justice. Drawing from his global mandate and recent country visits, Fakhri will spotlight the struggles and resistance of rural communities, Indigenous Peoples, and youth in defending their right to food and land. He will challenge governments and institutions to move beyond rhetoric toward concrete action rooted in human rights and solidarity.
In a world increasingly shaped by climate shocks, inequality, and conflict, transforming our food systems is not just urgent — it’s essential. This high-level panel will explore what it truly takes to build food systems that are resilient to crises, fair to farmers and consumers, and sustainable for future generations. Bringing together leading voices from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and global youth and agroecology movements, the discussion will unpack the role of public policies, land rights, farmer-led innovation, and intergenerational equity in this transformation. How can we shift power, rethink production models, and build solidarity across regions? Join us for a deep dive into the pathways to change — and the people already leading the way.
